How to Choose the Right Sump Pump

Most people buy the wrong sump pump because they shop on price and power rating. Those are the last two things that matter. Three questions decide it.

What Is In the Water?

Clean rainwater and clear stormwater are easy. Any submersible sump pump handles them. Grey water is different. Laundry water carries lint and hair. Silty stormwater in sandy Perth soil carries fine grit that grinds through an impeller. Water with suspended solids needs a vortex impeller, which spins a whirlpool in the pump body so most of the solids pass through without ever touching the impeller vanes. That is the difference between a sump pump that lasts ten years and one that jams in eight months. If the water contains raw sewage, toilet waste or anything chunky, stop. How Should It Switch On?

A manual sump pump runs whenever it has power. You control it, or you wire it to an external controller. A manual sump pit pump suits supervised jobs, hire fleets, and anyone running a level controller from our pump controllers or level control components range. An automatic sump pump has a float switch on a tether. Water rises, the float tips, the pump runs. Water drops, it stops. This is what most homeowners want and it needs no thought after install. A magnetic switch sump pump uses a vertical switch inside the pump body instead of a swinging float. Use it when the pit is narrow. A tethered float needs roughly 30cm of clear swing. In a tight pit it jams against the wall, the pump either never starts or never stops, and you find out during a storm. Magnetic switching solves that completely.

How Far Does the Water Have to Travel?

This is the number people skip. A sump pump has to lift water up to the discharge point and push it along the pipe run. Both cost pressure. Lift height is the big one. Every metre of vertical rise eats into flow. A long horizontal run adds friction on top. Measure the vertical distance from the bottom of the pit to the highest point of your discharge pipe, then measure the run to the outlet. If the lift is more than a few metres, or the run is long, call us before you order. We will check your numbers against the pump curve. That five minute call is the whole difference between a sump pump that works and one that hums, overheats and dies.
