The Grundfos SP is the pump most Australian bore owners end up with, and usually the one they should have bought first. Why the Grundfos SP Beats the Cheap Alternative

Stainless steel that goes all the way through

Every Grundfos SP submersible borehole pump on this page is built from EN 1.4301 stainless steel, better known as AISI 304, inside and out. Not a stainless sleeve over a cast iron pump end. Not stainless on the bits you can see. The impellers, chambers, shaft, strainer and outer sleeve are all stainless.

This matters more in bore water than in mains water. Groundwater carries dissolved iron, salts and sometimes low pH, and those quietly eat cast iron and pressed steel pumps from the inside. A budget bore pump can look fine on the outside while its impellers have thinned to paper. The Grundfos SP does not have that failure mode, which is why we still see fifteen and twenty year old units come through for a motor swap rather than a replacement.

Grundfos also builds the SP in 316 and 904L stainless for aggressive or saline water. We do not hold those on the shelf, but we can order them. If your bore water test shows high chloride, ring us before you buy a 304 unit.

Sand handling, which is what actually kills bore pumps

Most bore pump deaths in this state are sand, not electricity. Sand grinds the shaft seal, gets into the motor, and the motor fails. The Grundfos SP is rated by Grundfos for a maximum sand content of 50 to 150 ppm depending on model, and the MS motors that go with it carry a sand slinger, a filtered check valve and a tungsten carbide or ceramic shaft seal on the larger frames.

That is real engineering, not a brochure line. It is also why a Grundfos SP in a slightly sandy bore outlasts a generic pump by years. If your bore log shows heavy sand, tell us. Setting the pump higher in the casing and adding a flow sleeve usually costs less than replacing a pump twice.

Dry running protection and motor burnout protection

Every Grundfos SP works with the Grundfos MP 204 protection unit, and single phase MS402 motors under 1.1 kW have thermal cutout built into the windings. Three phase units need external overload protection, which is where the MP 204 or a properly set contactor earns its money. Bores drop in summer. A pump that keeps running dry is a pump you are replacing.

Which Grundfos SP Model Suits Your Bore

Grundfos names its submersible borehole pumps in a way that tells you everything. The first figure is nominal flow in cubic metres per hour, the second is the number of stages. More stages means more head, which means the pump can push water from deeper down or further up a hill. An SP 9-40 moves the same water as an SP 9-5, just from a much deeper bore.

Small domestic bores: SP 1A, SP 2A and SP 3A

These cover roughly 17, 33 and 50 litres per minute. This is the Grundfos SP bracket for a suburban garden bore running pop up sprinklers, a household tank top up, or stock troughs on a small block. SP 1A and SP 2A run happily on single phase 240V. Most Perth and Mandurah garden bores land here or in the SP 3A.

Larger blocks, turf and small farms: SP 5A and SP 7

Around 83 and 117 litres per minute. This is the Grundfos SP range for a hobby farm, a large lawn on acreage, a small orchard, or feeding a pressure tank for a house plus garden. The SP 5A is one of our steadiest sellers because it fits the five acre block so neatly.

Irrigation, stock water and community supply: SP 9, SP 11 and SP 14

Roughly 150, 183 and 233 litres per minute. Serious flow. This is the Grundfos SP end of the range for centre pivots, vineyard and orchard blocks, market gardens, community water supply and light industrial process water. Most of these are three phase, and the high stage counts like the SP 9-40 handle genuinely deep bores.

Single Phase or Three Phase Grundfos SP

Of the 107 Grundfos SP units on this page, 30 are single phase 240V and the rest are three phase 415V. Three phase is cheaper to run, easier on the motor and available in higher power. If you have three phase at the property, use it. If you do not, do not assume you are stuck. Single phase Grundfos SP models go up to 2.2 kW and cover most domestic and light rural duties. A three phase pump on a variable speed drive is another route worth pricing if you are near the limit. Ring us before you buy a converter, because the sums often do not work out the way people expect.

Buying a Grundfos SP in Australia

Perth, Mandurah and the Swan Coastal Plain

About one in four Perth households waters the garden from a bore, and garden bores across Perth and Mandurah pull roughly 90 gigalitres a year, which is close to a quarter of all groundwater taken in the region. That is a lot of pumps, and a lot of them are undersized or worn out.

If you are drawing from the shallow superficial aquifer for a garden under 2,000 square metres, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation does not require a licence. Above that, or for commercial use, you need one. Sprinkler rosters still apply either way. We are not the regulator, so check the current roster before you plan your watering.

Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Mid West, South West and Goldfields

Regional WA bores are usually deeper, often three phase, and much less forgiving of a wrong choice. A Grundfos SP that is one stage short will run all day and never fill the tank. Every Grundfos SP we have for sale ships Australia wide, free over $100, and we would rather spend ten minutes on the phone getting the model right than process a return from Kalgoorlie.

What to Have Ready Before You Order

Bore depth. Standing water level. Drawdown at your target flow. The flow you actually need in litres per minute. Total head, including vertical lift and pipe friction. Power supply, single or three phase. And your bore log if the driller gave you one, because it tells us casing diameter and sand.
