A circulator pump moves water in a loop. That is the whole job. It is not lifting water from a bore or pushing it to a roof tank, so it needs almost no head. It needs to beat the friction inside the pipework and keep water moving, which is why a circulator pump is small, sealed and rated in tens of watts. A circulator pump does two jobs here. Hydronic heating pushes hot water through radiators or floor loops. Hot water recirculation, the bigger one in Australia, runs a ring main so you are not standing at the tap for forty seconds. Hotels, aged care, gyms and apartment blocks all run one, and when it fails the complaints start that morning. Overseas this category is about heating. In Australia it is about hot water. That difference drives the most expensive error people make.
A closed heating loop holds the same water for years. The oxygen gets used up early and after that the water is chemically quiet. Cast iron is fine in there, which is why a cast iron circulator pump is cheap and why it became the European default. A ring main is the opposite. It carries fresh, oxygenated scheme or bore water and replaces it constantly. Run oxygenated water over bare iron every hour of every day and it rusts. The rust travels. You get discoloured water at the outlets, a seized rotor, and a warranty claim that will not be paid because the pump was never rated for that duty. The fix is simple once someone tells you. On potable hot water, use a stainless or bronze bodied circulator pump. In the Grundfos codes the letter N is your signal. A UPS 25-60 180 is cast iron. A UPS 25-60 N 180 is stainless. Same hydraulics, same footprint, different metal, and only one belongs on drinking water. Look for AS/NZS 4020 compliance for contact with drinking water. Worth saying plainly, because most Australian pages selling this category never mention it. One large competitor tags certain models "not recommended for hot water supply" and never explains why, which hands the buyer a problem without the answer.

An ALPHA2 reads the system and adjusts itself. Grundfos states these cut energy use by up to 80 percent against a conventional fixed speed circulator, because the pump only works as hard as demand requires instead of running flat out all night. The maths is easy on something that never switches off. An ALPHA2 25-60 180 is $677.10 against $383.97 fixed speed, so about $293 more. On a 24 hour loop that gap closes on the power bill. The stainless ALPHA2 25-60 N 130 and N 180 are $1,044.27 and are what you want on potable water. On a continuous ring main, variable speed is usually the cheaper pump over five years even though it is dearer on the day.
The Comfort 15-14 B is a circulator pump built for one job, killing the wait for hot water in a single dwelling. Brass body, integral non return valve, isolation built into the housing, $313.74. Most replacements do not need a hydraulic calculation. If the old circulator pump kept the loop hot and did not cavitate, match it. Note the model, the port to port length, the thread and the body material. Done. New installs need three numbers: flow in litres per minute, total friction head in metres, and fluid temperature. Those give you the duty point. Watch oversizing. A pump too big for the loop runs noisy, wears bearings early and can erode pipework at the elbows. Bigger is not safer here.
