A piston pump is a positive displacement pump. The piston slides inside a machined cylinder, draws liquid in through the inlet valve on the back stroke, then pushes that exact volume out through the outlet valve. Because the piston seals against the cylinder wall, Piston Pumps keep metering the same volume even as line pressure climbs. A centrifugal pump loses flow the moment head rises. Piston Pumps do not. That is why water treatment plants, mine site potable systems and irrigation sheds run Piston Pumps on the feeds they cannot afford to get wrong.
The other thing that separates Piston Pumps from cheaper solenoid gear is service life. A solenoid dosing pump is fine on a swimming pool. Put one on a 24 hour duty and you will be replacing it inside two years. We sell both, so here is the straight answer rather than a sales pitch. A diaphragm pump uses a flexible membrane to keep the liquid away from the drive, which suits abrasive, crystallising or hazardous fluids. Piston Pumps put the piston in direct contact with the liquid, which buys you higher pressure, tighter repeatability and a longer working life on clean, thin chemicals.
For sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid, caustic soda, liquid fertiliser and antiscalant, Piston Pumps usually win on accuracy and on cost per year. For slurries, lime or anything that drops solids out, look at our ITC diaphragm pumps instead. If your chemical sits somewhere in the middle, ring us and we will tell you honestly which way to go.
Turndown is the number most buyers forget to check. It is the range you can adjust across while still holding an accurate dose. The DOSTEC AC Piston Pumps use step motor control, so you can dial flow across a wide band without losing precision, and you can trim the setting as your water quality changes through the season.
Watch the pressure trade too. Across this range, the smaller heads carry the higher pressure ratings and the bigger heads carry the higher flows. The DTEC-AC2-10 delivers 10 L/hr at 1500 kPa. The DTEC-AC3-1200 delivers 1200 L/hr at 550 kPa. That relationship is normal for all Piston Pumps, and it is the first thing to check against the pressure at your injection point. If you are not sure what that pressure is, a pressure transducer on the line will tell you in an afternoon.

The DOSTEC AC series is the smart end of the range. Step motor technology drives the piston and the onboard controller automates the dose, so you often do not need a separate control panel at all. The AC2 models cover 10, 30, 60, 120, 240 and 360 L/hr on 20 mm connections. The AC3 models step up to 600, 900 and 1200 L/hr on 32 mm connections.
Wetted parts are specified to suit the chemical. Heads come in polypropylene, PVDF or 316 stainless steel, with piston options in UHMWPE, ceramic or 316 stainless, and valve balls in soda lime glass, borosilicate or 316 stainless. These Piston Pumps are rated IP55, run single phase, and offer remote monitoring and Modbus connectivity options. That last part matters more than people expect. When the pump is sitting four hours out of Kalgoorlie, being able to check the dose from your phone saves a day of driving.
The EFR series is the workhorse. These Piston Pumps use a positive return mechanism, which pulls the piston back mechanically instead of relying on suction alone. That makes them suited to continuous duty, higher pressures and thicker liquids where a lighter pump would starve.
Single head EFR Piston Pumps cover 1000, 1200, 1330 and 1600 L/hr. Dual head EFR Piston Pumps put two fully adjustable heads on one drive, giving 2000, 2400, 2660 or 3200 L/hr combined. The dual head layout is the one people underestimate. Running two heads off a single motor lets you dose two different chemicals at two different rates from one machine, which cuts your install cost, your footprint and your spares list on any multi chemical site.
Western Australia is hard on dosing equipment, and most pump content written for the east coast simply does not account for it. Bore water through the Wheatbelt and the Goldfields runs high in iron, calcium and salt, so chlorine and acid feeds have to be exact or you either burn chemical you did not need or miss your water quality target. Get it wrong on a potable supply and you are outside the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
Around Perth, Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton and Margaret River, the common jobs are chlorine dosing on scheme water top up, cooling tower treatment on commercial buildings, and pH correction in food and beverage processing. Pair yours with a pump controller and the system will hold its own setting without a person walking past it twice a day.
Out past the coast the ask changes. A dosing pump on a Pilbara mine site lives in 45 degree heat and red dust, and the nearest fitter might be a day away. In Carnarvon and the Ord, growers push liquid fertiliser through drip lines where a five percent dosing error only shows up in the crop weeks later. Around Geraldton, Northam, Merredin and Esperance it is bore water conditioning and stock water treatment.
For all of it, the case for Piston Pumps is the same: fewer wear parts in the flow path than a solenoid unit, hardened wetted materials that survive concentrated acid, and a mechanical action that does not drift when the ambient temperature swings 25 degrees between night and day. Start with flow, not price. Work out the litres per hour of chemical you need at your peak water flow, then add roughly 20 percent headroom so you are not running the pump flat out. Sitting at 100 percent of capacity all day is how dosing gear dies early.
Next, check pressure at the injection point, not at the pump. Line pressure plus the pressure drop across your injection quill is the number the pump has to beat. If your line runs at 600 kPa you want a pump rated well above that, which is why the smaller high pressure heads in this range are often the right answer even when the flow requirement looks modest.
Third, match the wetted materials to the chemical. Sodium hypochlorite and most acids are happy in PVDF. Concentrated sulphuric wants a different specification again. Liquid fertiliser is usually fine in polypropylene. Tell us the chemical, the concentration and the temperature, and we will specify the head, piston, valves and seals for you. Getting this wrong is the single most common reason a dosing pump fails inside its first year.
Last, decide how much control you need. If someone walks past the pump daily, a manually set unit is fine. If the pump is remote, unattended, or feeding a compliance sensitive supply, the DOSTEC AC control features pay for themselves the first time they stop a problem before anyone notices it.
